Who are your Run Leaders and Team TCRC
Group A
Malc Sherwood
Malc is the founder member of Thornton Cleveleys Running Club, Club Secretary and Head Coach. Malc continuously works behind the scenes to ensure that we have a club that is fun and welcoming to all. Malc enjoys off road running and through his support and encouragement, has seen many of the club achieve their goals and aspirations!
Lisa Young
I started running in 2012, at the time, I’d quit smoking and put loads of weight on so when my father who was already a member at TCRC mentioned they were doing a beginners group I thought I’d give it a go.
Since then I’ve done loads of races including Thunder Run 24hr relay – hated the night time run! Coniston 14 miles – long and hilly! and many many 5 and 10k races. Because I’m one of the slowest members there’s always people at the finish line cheering me in which is great and knowing they’re there helps me keep moving when my legs are tired and all I really want to do is sit down and eat cake!
I’ve made some great friends at TCRC and had lots of laughs over the last few years, they don’t care about how far or how fast I run they’re just always there telling me well done!
It’s ace seeing all you beginners making progress and I’m looking forward to you all beating me in races 😜
Karen Livesey
I joined TCRC a few years ago. My husband Steve joined first as he was training for a half marathon – he came home and told me what a great friendly bunch he’d met. So, I came along as a complete beginner, and Bev and Christine took me under their wings – no change there then!
I am a true example of running for fun and fitness. I enjoy the social side the most (and have made some great friends). I am not very competitive; have suffered injuries, and certainly not into long mileage but despite all this have achieved some great personal successes – always spurred on by the brilliant support from club members.
Last year I developed a love of trail races (could it be because you have to stop and walk I wonder??). This year it’s my goal to get a trail championship medal. Seriously… if I can achieve these things, so can you 🙂
Group B
Simon Mason
Been in TCRC since it began but have been running (irregularly) for about 15 years as a club runner, I don’t compete in road races as much these days but I do enjoy the odd distance trail/road race from time to time. I’ve always enjoyed encouraging other runners and love seeing people achieve something they never thought they could – just like you beginners.
Mel Foster
Mel loves off road running and will most definitely try and persuade you to have a go! She has been running on and off for 15 years, with her sister Bev (Group D leader). Mel is always up for a challenge and is currently training for the Coniston 14 mile road race!
Sarah Scott
I joined TCRC a few years ago having completed my first marathon. My first session was a speed session and loved how encouraging everyone was. I have achieved so much whilst I have been at the club and have met some great friends. There is no greater feeling than doing something that you never thought you could and I love that my two girls want to do what I do! I love seeing you all progress so much and even though you say that you can’t go any further, you still carry on running!
Karl Lucas
Karl has been with TCRC for the last 12 months and on Saturday ran the Sweatshop 10 mile road race in a club vest! Like you he came as a beginner and has continued to make great progress in his running and is always with a smile and ready to cheer you all on!
Group C
Christine Burgess
A chance meeting in the pub almost 7 years ago led to me starting to run. TCRC had just been formed and, having known Julie for many years, both me and Steve were persuaded to “come and have a go”. At the start I couldn’t run 100m but with Julie and Malc’s encouragement and emphasis on fitness and fun I gradually progressed. After 3 months I took part in my first 5 mile race at Lytham and was extremely proud to complete it. Since then I have gone on to complete various races both road and trail, half marathons being my limit.
It is now off road running that I enjoy most, whether this is at Scorton, Lake District or Trough of Bowland. You do get muddy and wet but it is fun with great surroundings – not serious at all.
I enjoy seeing all you new people improve week on week – and you all are – if I can do it anyone can!
Steve Burgess
Steve has been with the club for almost 7 years and is one of the reasons that I (Sarah Scott) made great progress in my first year at the club. His encouraging nature and sense of humour make him ideal for our beginners group. Steve loves off road running and is having a storming year so far!
Julie Sherwood
The smiling face of TCRC. Julie is the TCRC chairman and the founder member with her other half Malc! Julie loves off road running, cross country and anything that is a challenge! She is super encouraging and will have you doing things you never thought you could do!
Group D
Bev Foster
I started running off and on about 15 years ago and built up to do the Blackpool 10k fun run. My sister Melanie then persuaded me to join a running club and we both started doing a bit more. I’ve completed the London Marathon 4 times but really enjoy trail races in the Lakes or up at Scorton. I run so I can eat chocolate and drink wine!!! …. Oh and because I’ve made some great friends and have some great laughs!!! The running is just an excuse for a natter!!
Tony Codling / Andrew Fairbairn
Both Andy and Tony are coming back from injury and you will see them intermittently. Andy is TCRC men’s current captain and there is nothing that this guy has not achieved! His fabulous sense of humour will keep you entertained!
Running Groups
As the week’s progress, so will your running stamina and speed. The group that you originally started in may no longer challenge you, so you may need to move to the next group. Some groups will split into two groups, which could possibly mean that you stay in the same group, but continue to make great progress. The letter of your group is just to ensure that we have the right number of run leaders and helpers each week. Each group will run further and get faster.
TCRC Main Sessions
What happens at the TCRC main sessions….
TUESDAY – Tuesday is a club run, meeting at the YMCA at 6.45pm – ready to run at 7pm. Runs from 3 up to 9 miles will take place, with different speed/ability groups. Each individual ensures that they have a group to run with, prior to leaving the YMCA.
Following the run, showers are available at the YMCA and then a short journey to the Tramway pub for liquid refreshments!
THURSDAY – Thursday is speed training. Speed training takes place in different locations – Fleetwood, Thornton, Blackpool and in the summer, Scorton. Speed training is for every ability and the sessions are structured to cater for everyone. Training starts at 7pm.
ALWAYS HERE…..
Your progression and enjoyment of running is very important to us and we are always here for you to ask questions. The TCRC beginners Facebook group is extremely popular and is a great place to encourage your fellow runners!
We are very proud of you all and look forward to seeing you all on Thursday!
Your TCRC Team !
